Preparing Bedding
From WormWiki
The specific preparation required will depend on the type of bin you use. For most worm bins, you will want to moisten the bedding before using it. Soak the bedding in rain water, clean snow or any other non-chlorinated water source until squeezing results in only a few drops seeping out. If you must use chlorinated water, fill a bucket with the water and allow it to sit without a lid for 24 hrs so that the chlorine will evaporate.
If you are setting up a new bin, you may want to mix your moistened bedding with some food and allow it to sit for a few days before you add worms to the bin. This will give the food a chance to start breaking down, and will provide something for your worms to eat right away. If you leave the bin for more than a week without adding worms, make sure to stir the bedding occasionally and add water as needed so that it does not become anaerobic and smelly.
You may want to keep some spare bedding on hand to add when you feed the bin. Some foods might become stinky in the bin without extra bedding, and some may be too wet. You will get a feel for this as you get used to your bin. If you keep extra bedding on hand and add it occasionally, there's generally no need to soak it ahead of time. You can either add it dry to spray it with water as you add it.
