Your worm bin is a community that has LOTS of other creatures in it. The vast majority are microscopic and those are the ones you want to take the best care of because they're what the worms actually eat.

There are also lots of small critters that move around quickly. They speed up the rate of food degradation and make it easier for the worms to get the food.
